Welcome to the Branded Podcast Insider!

This blog post, authored by Joe Stone, was originally written for and published by Jam Street Media on Sep 18, 2019 , and is no longer publicly available.

It's not just another newsletter.

Want to know how businesses are leveraging the power of podcasts? You've come to the right place. This is the first volume in a weekly series from Jam Street Media that covers what’s going on the world of branded podcasts, news items, tips, and a Featured Podcast of the Week! This is just a start as we'll be adding features and additional content as each week goes on, so be sure to subscribe if you haven't already.

There's plenty of room to grow.

The podcast industry has been around for more than a decade but is recently exploding in popularity with ad spend expected to cross over $1B this year! The money goes to wear the people are, and people are listening.

It’s not just hipsters and millennials jumping on the podcast train - even school children are doing it! Early this year, NPR held a Student Podcast Challenge where they had more than 25,000 entries from middle and high schoolers.

With all these people producing podcasts, who’s listening? It turns out, lots of people. The latest Neilsen data (from 2017), shows that podcasts are now in 50% of all homes in the U.S. That’s 60 million homes! Our guess is, the number is now much higher than that.

Not only are entertainers finding success in the industry, but other businesses are as well. Why? They can provide better value and connect with their customers on a more personal level.

This Just In...

Brother!

One of the latest brands to throw their hat in the ring is the WWE. Yep, that wrestling organization that is known for wrestlers in colorful costumes, speedos, and plenty of overacting. They just announced they are creating their own podcast network.

A great move, considering their industry revolves around storytelling. This is just another avenue for them to expand on that.

Some music to our ears.

The infamous Nu-Metal band, Korn is starting a podcast miniseries called The Nothing - which is also the name of their upcoming album. It’s a fictional story about a journalist who goes to investigate the disappearance of a teenager and discovers something in the process. According to The Verge, the band didn’t say how the podcast tied into their upcoming album - but we assume that it will.

Branded Podcast of the Week!

"Work in Progress" from Slack.

The Jam Street Media team has been scouring the interwebs looking for interesting branded podcasts to share with you. This week, we decided to feature “Work in Progress,” created by the folks behind Slack, a team productivity app - something we rely on heavily ourselves. It’s a podcast hosted by Dan Misener, our friend over at Pacific Content.

“Work in Progress,” is a well-produced podcast that is entertaining to listen to and gives some insight into why people do the things they do for work and where they find meaning it. He’s spoken to an inventor who ditched his cushy corporate job to invent a jetpack, a professional cuddler, and some folks who landed dream jobs. In the latest episode, Dan talks to a reporter who did a remote broadcast from inside a block of ice - for 48 hours.

If you are looking for some meaning in your life and are trying to break out of the rut, this podcast might just be the motivation you need.
